How to Identify Signs of Appendicitis in Children

Jun 07 , 2021

Appendicitis is a common problem faced by children aged between 5-20 years of age and it can be a painful experience. It is important to keep an eye out because there is a 48 to 72 hours window after which there is a chance that the infected appendix can burst.

To avoid this situation, it is best to be informed and to notice the symptoms so medical attention can be provided on time. Here is how you can identify the symptoms of appendicitis in children.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the abdominal region
  • Tenderness and pain in the lower right side of the belly.
  • No improvement in abdominal pain and no effect of medicines
  • Hard to move because of the pain and unable to breathe after a point
  • Eventual loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Troubled bowel movements
  • Gastrointestinal issues

These are some of the common symptoms that are seen in children, although, they may differ from child to child. If these symptoms are indeed due to appendicitis then your doctor will recommend a CT scan or a stomach ultrasound along with other ones.

The appendix is likely to be removed via traditional or laparoscopic surgery. Some medicines may be prescribed depending on the condition and dietary changes may be suggested too.

Don’t take any symptom lightly and check with your doctor.
