Good news for kids as according to the the fresh directives issued by the HRD ministry to states and union territories across the country states that no homework for students of classes I and II and prescribed weight limit of school bags for each class.

According to the official order, the HRD ministry has “instructed all the states and Union Territories to formulate guidelines to regulate the teaching of subjects and weight of school bags in accordance with the Government of India instructions”. Besides this the weight of school bags for students of classes I and II should not exceed 1.5 kg, while the school bag of students of class III to V should weigh between 2 kg to 3 kg.

The school bag of students of classes VI and VII should not be more than 4 kg, while weight of school bags of classes VIII and IX students should not be above 4.5 kg. The school bag of a class X student should not weigh above 5 kg, the order said. Also students should not be asked to bring additional books and extra materials.

When we asked few mothers about this, here is what they feel.
Cramming has sadly become a synonym for our Indian education. I think it’s best to step back and concentrate on basics of working knowledge and values over books. This move is a much welcome respite says Anupriya Chugh, mother of a 4.5 year old boy.

Less bag weight is a great step as finally kids don’t have to carry a heavy bag which means less strain on their shoulders says Meenal Rai, mother of a 13 year old girl.

As a parent, I feel school hours do not mean studies and as parents if we help our child with homework, it helps me bond and educate. Education is not the school’s responsibility only, a little bit of homework is a must to inculcate a routine says Radhika Verma, mother of a 4 year old son.

My son does his homework in his tuition so good news for his teacher though I feel a page or two must be given for revision, Samiksha Shah, who’s son is 5 years old.

I am really happy with the news as being a working mom it gets really tough for me to make him do homework says Raina Malik , a working professional and a mother of a 4.5 year old.
